designs to improve life

designs to improve life
Today, a widening field of designers and manufacturers is turning inspiration, skills and industrial capabilities to issues of improving life, both in the developed world and still-emerging societies. The INDEX: Award 2011 Exhibition in Copenhagen, Denmark will feature the 60 finalists in the INDEX: Award 2011 - the world's biggest, life-improving design award.

INDEX: Award Exhibition has over the years showcased design displays in hundreds of 6-feet, see-through, acrylic spheres scattered around Kongens Nytorv Square in downtown Copenhagen. However, in 2011, INDEX: collaborated with American architect Greg Lynn and Danish architect Christian Ditlev Bruunhas to come up with a brand new exhibition design to be located at Copenhagen's new hip hang-out, Ophelia Beach (Kvæsthusmolen), which is next to Copenhagen's beautiful new Royal Playhouse.

The new design is a departure from the minimalistic traditions of Scandinavia and will feature several 12-feet high black, organic shapes with golden, square insets containing the displays. The shapes are covered with solar cells powering LED-lights to light up the designs at night.

The 60 finalists in INDEX: Award 2011 represents about 6 percent of the total number (966) of nominations for the world’s biggest design award. After showcasing the finalists in Copenhagen, the exhibition will commence its world tour, currently planned to include six major cities in Asia and Europe (with more to be decided), and is expected to run until 2013.  Updates on venues and dates can be obtained from the events calender.

The INDEX: Award 2011 Exhibtion is now open, free to all visitors, at Kvæsthusmolen, in Copenhagen, Denmark, until September 25th 2011.
