stories in paper-cut silhouettes

text . Pauline Chan .

Beatrice Coron only started her artist career at the age of 40. Born and raised in Lyon, France, Beatrice worked a variety of jobs and lived in Egypt, Taiwan and Mexico. She worked as a tour guide and began to live in New York in 1984. Beatrice is a self-taught artist who began telling her stories through cutting paper in her apartment.  She narrates her whimsical stories of her imagination, travels and experiences through the intricate cutouts using just some small knives and paper.  Each piece invites the viewer to explore the design and discover hidden oddities in the complicated construction.

Beatrice now works with a stronger material, Tyvex- a type of wrap used in construction - which she can transport easily as she exhibits her designs all over the world. Many of her work end up in collections including those in libraries, universities and major museums such as the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.

Beatrice's art is not glued but consist of one whole connected piece. "They are not glued" she said, "so I have to think about structure, in that everything is connected." She begins with a concept in mind, but the images are shaped and reshaped with her memories, imagination and experiences as she gradually progresses through the piece.

Besides paper, she has also constructed her art in metal, steel, stone and glass.  She has illustrated books, recreated her paper-cut images on subway lines and designer boutique windows, and started a collection of wearable paper dresses and accessories, and she continues to tell her stories in creative ways wherever she goes.
