patent registry

PATENT : From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A patent is a form of intellectual property. It consists of a set of exclusive rights granted by a sovereign state to an inventor or their assignee for a limited period of time in exchange for the public disclosure of an invention.

The procedure for granting patents, the requirements placed on the patentee, and the extent of the exclusive rights vary widely between countries according to national laws and international agreements. Typically, however, a patent application must include one or more claims defining the invention which must meet the relevant patentability requirements such as novelty and non-obviousness. The exclusive right granted to a patentee in most countries is the right to prevent others from making, using, selling, or distributing the patented invention without permission.

The Attorney General's Chambers (AGC) and the Brunei Economic Development Board (BEDB) has announced the impending establishment of a Patent Registry Office in Brunei, having received the consent by His Majesty to implement the Patents Order, 2011.

The Patent Registry Office (PRO) is located at the Knowledge Hub (K Hub) in Anggerek Desa and started operations on January 1st this year. It is administered by the BEDB in  collaboration with the Intellectual Property Division of the AGC.

BEDB expects the PRO to be one of the key catalysts in generating economic growth through the introduction of improved mechanisms designed for protection of patents, which can boost innovation and commercialisation efforts by local businesses.  The PRO aims to protect local ideas and inventions as well as investors, with the hope to encourage more research and development activities in Brunei.

The PRO will provide services which will include granting patents, hearing matters relating to patentability and infringements, advising on patent policies, promoting the patent system and assisting stakeholders such as IHLs, SMEs and MNCs in patenting their ideas and products.
