During the month of February, the Brunei Art Forum (BAF) will hold an exhibition at the Waterfront Gallery showcasing a series of artwork to celebrate the 2012 Brunei Darussalam National Day. The exhibition - entitled 'Art Warisan, Heritage Seni' - will feature artistic creations carrying themes based on 10 words selected for this special art event planned to coincide with the National Day Celebrations.
Visitors to the gallery will be able to view over 100 pieces of artwork including sculptures and installations, by 30 artists who have drawn inspiration from the words: tradition tradisi, peace keamanan, nature alam, vibrant kesegaran, tales dongeng, wealth kekayaan, texture tekstur, regal kedaulatan, people rakyat and life kehidupan.
The Heritage exhibition starts today with a special preview at 7.30 p.m. and will be attended by the Guest-of-Honour Dato Paduka Hj Mohd Hamid Hj Mohd Jaafar, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Youth, Culture and Sports, and invited VIP guests. The Heritage exhibition is organised in collaboration with the Brunei Museum Department, and supported by BruneiONS.com and Printmartz. The exhibition venue is the Waterfront Art Gallery at The Old Custom Building in the heart of Bandar Seri Begawan. The display is open to the public for viewing from tomorrow to the end of February, 2012.
The Brunei Art Forum exhibition at the Waterfront Gallery was officially opened by the Minister of Culture Youth and Sports, Pehin Orang Kaya Pekerma Laila Diraja Dato Seri Setia Hj Hazair Hj Abdullah on 13th January 2012. It was well-attended by invited VIPs from the government sector, foreign diplomats and members of the local art industry. Since then, the gallery has been receiving visitors daily from near and far. The displays have not stayed static as new paintings have been put up to replace pieces that were sold during the exhibition. Visitors can look forward to fresh new work at different times.
The art scene in Brunei has been evolving and growing in recent years. The BAF aims to be the place to harness new ideas, new talents and the eclectic manifestations of creativity in the country. The BAF started out as a platform for artistic talents - both professional and amateur - to meet in a nurturing environment to share experiences, knowledge and thoughts, as well as to create collaborations among BAF members and other individuals and organisations.
The BAF aspires to elevate the status and importance of art in the Bruneian society and to make art more accessible to the public, encouraging a wider appreciation and interest in the field of arts and creativity. It also hopes to reach out to young people with fresh perspectives, who are seeking opportunities in the arts, and give them a chance to explore the field and contribute to the art scene, and perhaps in the near future, a burgeoning art industry.
Visitors to the exhibition are encouraged to step into the gallery, relax and explore the individual artwork, which includes batik, abstract art, portraits and installations. Some of the displayed pieces are for sale. Interested buyers can contact the BAF treasurer on 8668244 (Fatimah Jaafar) or 8918806 (Ampuan Siti Ramlah). The exhibition is open from Sunday to Thursday - 9.00 a.m to 4.30 p.m; Friday - 9.00.a.m to 11.30 a.m; 2.30 p.m to 4.30 p.m, and Saturday - 9.00 a.m to 4.30 p.m. The Brunei Art Forum is presently recruiting more members and is drafting an exciting calendar for 2012. For details and future updates, the public can check the BAF Facebook page, Brunei Art Forum - Official.
