The Home of Bruneian Art

By Syen Sofian

Rainforest Gallery is not a new name amongst the local art scene. The gallery opened its door years ago in Kiulap and has been providing art classes, exhibitions and selling paintings and works from artists in Brunei.

Now, the gallery is situated in the beautifully landscaped Jubilee Park and continues to provide art classes for children and exhibition space for any artist who wishes to share their work. The Rainforest Gallery was officially opened  on the 14th May 2014 by the Brunei Darussalam Deputy Minister of Home Affairs Pehin Datu Laila Raja Major General (Rtd.) Dato Paduka Seri Awang Haji Halbi Haji Mohammad Yussof.

The manager and owner of the Rainforest Gallery, Dato Paduka Shofry Abdul Ghafor is also the President of Brunei Art Forum and one of Brunei's well known artist. I was able to view one of his recent work closely and to hear him speak of his inspiration behind each masterpiece is something that I have always enjoyed when visiting galleries. Some of his vibrant works and brilliant strokes on canvas are available for viewing in the gallery which is open from 9.00am to 5.00pm daily and free of charge.  The gallery also showcases works from other local artists from various medium and style.

We can call this place the 'Home of Bruneian Art' as it is right in the middle of Bandar Seri Begawan and it will add more life and colours to surrounding area. Parents can bring their children for art classes while enjoying their afternoon at the park, go for a stroll along the river bank, exercise or just to sit and enjoy the scene. The Jubilee Park is located by the river bank and the scenic environment is also a perfect subject to be transfer on to your canvas.
