The U.S. Masterchef's Season 3 premiered in the United States on June 4th and 5th. This season is somewhat different from previous seasons. Viewers get to see a young lady, Christine Ha, cooking for the three judges, Gordon Ramsay, Graham Elliot and Joe Bastianich to earn a white apron that allows her to compete on the show. Christina is a unique competitor that Masterchef has never had before- she is blind.
Christina Ha, 33, suffers from neuromyelitis optica also known as Devic's syndrome, an autoimmune disease that affects the optic nerves and spinal cord. She went blind in 2007 but despite her lack of sight, she started a cooking blog last year to combine her interests in cooking and writing. She has never studied cooking but according to her blog, she loves to eat and she loves to cook for other people. "I write what I eat. I write what I cook. And I write what I taste and feel throughout these experiences, not only with food but with life in general as a sight-impaired individual". She uses her senses to cook and tastes each ingredient before she uses it in a dish. She figures out by smell and touch whether an ingredient is fresh. When she cuts with a knife, she is very careful and employs a cutting technique. For her, cooking just involves 'a lot of organisation'.
In her interview with Olivia Fleming for MailOnline, the brave cook said that the judges did not treat her differently. They told her what was right or wrong with her dishes. "There was constructive criticism. I feel like they judged fairly." Prior to getting on Masterchef, Christine wrote food reviews for the Houston Press. She also shares her journey on coping with her neurological disorder on NMO Diaries with 2 other young women who have the same medical condition. They hope to share their stories and inspire others with the same medical challenges to live life to the fullest.
