The skies of Albuquerque in New Mexico, USA, were decorated with hundreds of hot-air balloons from the 1st to 9th October. The Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta is set in the high-desert city along the Rio Grande at the 200-acre Balloon Fiesta Park.

The fair began in 1972 as a shopping-mall-parking-lot event with just 13 balloons, and these days, it attracts about 700 balloonists and over 100,000 spectators, and it is world's largest hot-air balloon event. Spectators are treated to a rainbow spectacle of balloons in all manner of colours and patterns. There is a Special Shapes Rodeo where imaginative, non-traditional, whimsical-shaped balloons are launched at the same time.

In the night, more than 100 balloons are lit simultaneously and released into the sky creating splashes of luminous radiance. Spectators are also treated to flying competitions and fireworks, live music performances and balloon rides.
